Gliding Syllabus

The ATC own it's own fleet of gliders, which are operated by Volunteer Gliding Schools (VGS) based around the country.

The glider fleet consists of the winch launched Viking (Grob 103), and the self launched Vigilant (Grob 109) motor glider.

As a cadet you may be given the opporunity to progress through various stages of glider training, leading to the chance to fly solo.

Air Experience Gliding (AEG)

Your first experience may be on an air experience flight which will give you a flavour of what it is like to glide.

Gliding Induction Course (GIC)

The GIC has been designed to give you a taste for Air Cadet Gliding. You will be shown various aspects of gliding, from pitch to roll, with the opportunity to take control and practice what you have learnt. After you have completed the course, you will be awarded a GIC certificate.

Gliding Scholarship (GS)

Gliding Scholarship WingsA Gliding Scholarship course is an opportunity for cadets to undergo further training and achieve Gliding Scholarship Wings. The course consists of up to 40 launches in a Viking or 8 hours in a Vigilant to achieve GS wings.

Gliding Scholarship Solo WingsCadets showing the necessary aptitude are invited to progress onto the 'solo' standard and achieve the GS Solo Wings.

 

Advanced Gliding Scholarship WingsCadets assessed as Above Average by a senior Instructor on their Scholarship may be invited to join the staff of the Volunteer Gliding School (VGS) as a Flight Staff Cadet. As a reward for hard work on the ground they will be given an Advanced course of 5 hrs including you flying 5 solo circuits.
