Basic Expedition Leaders Award (BELA)

The BELA award was introduced in 1988 for people who want to lead groups of young people in the outdoors.

The BELA award was introduced in 1988 for people who want to lead groups of young people in the outdoors. The course is divided into 10 modules :-

  2. Instructional & Organisation Method
  3. Planning & Preparation
  4. Conservation & Access
  5. Navigation
  6. Equipment
  7. Living Out-of-Doors
  8. First Aid & Emergencies
  9. Fitness & Weather
  10. Voluntary Leadership

Glasgow & West Scotland Wing has been running BELA award courses since September 2001. The course is available to SNCO’s and staff aged 17 and above, although students must be aged over 18 before they can complete the award.

Students on the course progress through training in a sheltered environment at Garelochhead, through to a 2 day, self sufficient expedition around Glen Finglas.
